Ancient Gold Coins

Collecting medieval coins is done more for the fun of it than for investment purpose.

There are some ancient gold coins you can buy. They might be Roman or Medieval coins.

Most Medieval Coins in Europe in the middle ages were made of silver and bronze, but gold coins from Byzantium made their way up to Europe. These Medieval Gold Coins were known as Bezants.

There are many fake medieval coins, real ones are very rare. This is not an area the beginner should venture in. When buying ancient coins, know your coins, know your dealer and inspect before you buy. 

Roman Gold Coins are worth more than their weight in gold! In fact, they are worth a lot more.

The Romans used gold, silver and copper coins in their monetary system.  The gold coin was usually around 95 percent pure gold. Most are rare and when buying or selling are worth well over the value of the gold content.

When buying Roman Gold Coins, know the coin and know the dealer. Collecting Roman Gold Coins is a specialty.

Old Gold Coins

Before the Krugerrand was issued there were not very many old gold coins with real pure gold. Collecting these coins is not as expensive as the Roman and Medieval Gold Coins.

A typical example of those that were is the Austrian 100 Coronas. This was a large gold coin produced between 1908 and 1914 and later reissued in 1916 as commemorative coins. Other good Austrian Coins are the franc and florins, and because they had a limited mintage, they are favourite items for collectors.

Other Older Gold Coins are those produced in Austra, like the Austrian 100 Coronas, originally produced between 1908 and 1914.
